Some signs point to possible slowdown of omicron wave in Mexico

There are some signs that the aggressive omicron wave in Mexico could be losing steam.

After several weeks of explosive growth, the omicron-driven surge appears to be slowing, said Dr. Hugo Lopez-Gatell, head of Mexico’s COVID-19 response. The most recent week did show an increase over the previous week, but a much more modest one.

“This, I insist, should be taken with caution,” he said of that data. But if the trend continues, it could herald a positive change, he added

In Sonora, Arizona’s neighbor to the south,  dataclosely tracked by analyst Luis Armando Moreno show a similar deceleration. Deaths in the state over the last three weeks are trending more steadily upward, and totaled 93 last week.
