Arizona Opera takes to the stage with 'Carmen'

Opera is one of the most challenging art forms to master — both for performers and audiences.

Some people shy away from attending operas because they’re concerned about understanding it due to its style and language. But it has lasted through the centuries for good reason, and one of the most popular operas is "Carmen," which Arizona Opera begins performing Jan. 28 at Phoenix Symphony Hall.

One of its stars is Vanessa Vasquez, who plays Micaëla in the show and who grew up in the Valley.

The Show spoke with her and started the conversation by asking whether it would be especially exciting to perform in front of her “home” crowd.
