A number of U.S. state attorneys are backing Mexico’s effort to sue American gun manufacturers in federal court.
This week, the Democratic attorneys general of 13 states and the District of Columbia argued that Mexico’s attempt to sue 11 American gun companies should proceed.
Mexico claims that the companies are “actively facilitating” the illegal traffic of weapons into the country, where it says the vast majority of weapons found at crime scenes were trafficked illegally from the U.S. The companies forcefully reject those and other claims, Reuters reportedin November.
But in a late January brief, the state AGs argued that if the court were to dismiss the case it could compromise their ability to hold gun companies accountable for misconduct, as well as “give rise to serious 10th amendment concerns.”
