2 police officers murdered, others injured in armed attack in Guaymas, Sonora

Early Wednesday morning, Guaymas police officers were attacked by a group of heavily armed suspects, leaving two officers dead and two others severely injured, according to state officials.

Four police officers have been murdered so far this year in the municipality. At least 20 have been killed in Guaymas since 2018, and 58 across Sonora during that time period.

"Unfortunately, the security situation in Guaymas has gone from bad to worse," said Krimilda Bernal, director of the citizen watchdog group Sonora Security Observatory. "And that police continue to be killed shows clearly the situation of impunity."

She said a federal security plan that replaced civilian police chiefs with military leaders in Guaymas and several other Sonoran cities in 2019 has not improved the situation for police or the public, and that she and others urge state and federal leaders to rethink their current strategy.

The municipality has also seen surging numbers of murders, femicides, disappearances and other violent crime.
