On Wednesday, Mexican officials announced that three people have been arrested in connection with the killing of a journalist in Tijuana.
"Three suspects were detained for the homicide of journalist Lourdes Maldonado," Security Secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez said during a morning press conference.
Maldonado was shot outside her home in Tijuana last month, becoming the third of four reporters murdered in Mexico in January.
Her killing has drawn particular attention because in 2019 she made a public plea for help to President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador, saying that she feared for her life over a labor dispute.
In the wake of her killing, the president promised that those responsible in this and other cases would be found.
However, more than 90% of murders of journalists during his administration remain unsolved, according to Alejandro Encinas, sub secretary of human rights.
