Suspect detained for murder of Sonoran searcher

Last year, a member of a Sonoran group dedicated to searching for the missing was murdered. Now officials say they have detained a suspect in her killing.

Gladys Aranza Ramos was gunned downin her home near Guaymas, Sonora, last July. A member of the volunteer group Guerreras Buscadoras de Sonora, she had been searching for her husband who disappeared more than a year ago.

On Wednesday night, Sonoran Attorney General Claudia Indira Contreras announced that one of the suspects in the case had been arrested for the killing, which is being investigated as a femicide.

She added that five young people who had been kidnapped, as well as two other suspects, weapons and a stolen vehicle were recovered at the scene.

Contreras says two additional people allegedly involved in Ramos’ murder were themselves killed last August.

Ramos, 28, was the mother of a 2-year-old daughter. Her husband, Brayan Omar Celaya, has been missing since December 2020.
