Phoenix police say a woman has died after being found in critical condition at a home where a suspect wounded nine officers.
Investigators believe the woman was the mother, and the suspect was the father, of a baby girl rescued Friday from the scene near Laveen.
Phoenix police say the suspect had already ambushed one officer when an unidentified man who investigators believe is a family member exited the home holding a baby.
The man obeyed orders to put the infant down and surrender.
When Phoenix police moved to rescue the child, the suspect began shooting and wounded eight more officers.
“A baby, innocently in the middle of a barrage of gunfire. This has to stop,” said Chief Jeri Williams at a news conference.
Phoenix police say the child was rescued by SWAT team members.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Morris Jones, was found dead inside the home.
The woman’s name has not been released.
All nine officers are expected to survive. Five were directly hit by gunfire. Another four were wounded by shrapnel or ricocheting bullets.
The violence resulted in a wave of support for Phoenix police, said Mayor Kate Gallego.
“I have heard from local neighborhood leaders, business leaders. The White House reached out with concern,” she said.
