It’s been six months since Sonora committed to taking emergency action to combat gender-based violence in some of the states hardest hit areas. This week, the governor finally proposed a budget for those measures.
Last August, Sonoran officials declared a Gender Violence Alert in six municipalities. The alert includes 32 recommendations for prevention, safety, justice and victim compensation, and is meant to provide tools and resources to combat violence against women.
Now, a new interagency working group has been announced, and Gov. Alfonso Durazo has promised to provide a budget to help carry out those recommendations.
Members of the working groups say they hope to send a message of zero tolerance for violence against women and girls.
Meanwhile, advocates have applauded the declaration, but also expressed frustration that leaders were slow to take action.
