Community gardens will soon be planted at a Phoenix park. It’s part of a bigger plan to improve quality of life for residents along 27th Avenue.
People who live close to Homestead Park near 27th and Glendale avenues have been working to reclaim an area that’s become home to prostitution and drug activity.
Last fall, the Parks Department launched after school activities at the park, and Councilwoman Betty Guardado has been pushing for more amenities. On Wednesday, her council colleagues approved using federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to install six raised garden beds at Homestead Park.
“We’ve had so many neighbors that have come out and given their input,” she said. “A lot of people that are excited about what’s going to happen at this park and very thankful for all of them for guiding us through this process and making sure we do what we need to do for these neighbors and handing parks over back to these neighborhoods.”
Last month, the council approved a nearly $6 million public safety plan focused along the 27th Avenue from Indian School Road to Northern Avenue.
