On a nearly party-line vote, Arizona Republicans in the House passed House Bill 2238, a bill that would put restrictions on ballot drop-boxes. Two Democrats did not vote.
One of the bill’s sponsors, Republican Rep. Jake Hoffman, says physically monitoring, or video recording drop-boxes, will make elections more secure.
Democratic Rep. Kelli Butler says this bill is costly and unnecessary.
“This seems like an attempt to just put huge barriers. Especially in rural and tribal communities where creating this camera situation, monitoring these drop-boxes, is going to be a huge expense," Butler said.
The bill now goes to the Senate.
There are Senate bills, like Senate Bill 1571 and Senate Bill 1058, also addressing drop-boxes.
