With 13 more confirmed Thursday, Sonora passed 10,000 official COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic, an astonishing toll in a state with less than 3 million people. That means roughly one out of every 294 Sonorans have died of the disease.
Federal excess mortality data paint a bleaker picture: while not all were directly caused by the novel coronavirus, roughly 16,000 more people in Sonora have died than would have been expected in the absence of the pandemic over the last two or so years.
While grim, the milestone comes as cases and deaths have been steadily declining for weeks from the Omicron surge, according to datatracked by analyst Luis Armando Moreno.
