After raising concerns about the dangers faced by Mexican journalists, the European Parliament got an angry response from the Mexican government.
In a resolutionapproved overwhelmingly Thursday, the European Parliament called on Mexican authorities to take steps to protect journalists. The body acknowledged that Mexico is the world’s most dangerous place for reporters outside of a warzone, and lamented regular anti-press messages from President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and other powerful officials.
The strong message provoked a strong, insult-laden official responsefrom the Mexican government, from which AMLO — as the president is widely known — read Friday morning.
“Enough with the corruption, the lies, and the hypocrisy,” he read from a text that he said he helped draft.
It went on to excoriate members of the body for having allegedly joined “like sheep” what AMLO described as the reactionary, coup-promoting enemies of his government’s agenda.
