Sonoran attorney general touts record on femicide prosecutions

The attorney general in neighboring Sonora is touting her office’s record on femicide prosecutions.

Between 2017 and last month, there were 176 femicides — or the murder of women because of their gender — in Sonora. And in that same period, Sonoran Attorney General Claudia Indira Contreras said that there were 171 culprits sentenced to an average of 50 years in prison.

“Here the message is zero impunity,” she said. “Whoever dares to hurt a woman will be punished.”

As a matter policy, every murder of a woman in Sonora is initially investigated as a femicide, according to Contreras.
