Federal lawmakers want to know why Homeland Security was tracking wire transfers to Mexico

A federal government program that collected data on money transfers between a handful of U.S. states and Mexico is coming under scrutiny after Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, raised questions about it.

Wyden is asking the federal Homeland Security Department to look into the program, which grew out of a court settlement from a case here in Arizona.

Stacy Cowley, a business reporter for the New York Times, has written about this.
