The Arizona Senate has passed a measure that sets new requirements for what schools and teachers have to make available to parents.
The bill, which passed on a party line vote with Republican support, requires a listing of all materials, such as textbooks, and activities for parents to access and review in advance.
Republican Sen. Paul Boyer, who is also a teacher, says educators are already setting up lesson plans.
Democratic Sen. Christine Marsh, a former teacher, worries it will waste school resources.
“Many of those students' teachers won't be spending as much time with them as they could otherwise because they're going to be busy loading thousands of points of data online every week or two."
The bill requires school principals to respond to parent complaints within 15 days. It also allows parents, the attorney general, and the state school superintendent to pursue legal action if complaints aren’t resolved.
