The Russian invasion and occupation of Ukraine enters its fifth week March 17.
The unjustified aggression has led to the displacement of more than 3 million Ukrainians, and reporting on the number of civilian deaths has ranged from 1,100 to as high as 15,000.
Women and children have been encouraged to leave the cities which have been enduring constant and escalating bombardment; men and many women of fighting age are staying to protect their country.
Yuriy Matsarsky is one of those men, and before the invasion, he was a reporter. As a journalist, Ukraine native Matsarsky reported from conflict zones around the world, including Iraq, Syria and the Gaza Strip. Now, he is a defender of his homeland, trading in a laptop for a Kalashnikov rifle.
