Arizona law allowing motorcycles to split lanes is awaiting Ducey's signature

A bill approved by the Arizona Legislature would allow motorcycles to lane filter on Arizona’s roads. That means motorcyclists could move between cars up to the intersection.

The maneuver may only be completed on at least a four-lane road with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour or slower, and cars must be at a complete stop.

Michael Infanzon, of ABATE of Arizona, a motorcycle safety group, says the state’s motorcyclists have been wanting a bill like this for a while.

"We read about motorcycle fatalities either every day or every other day, and hear it on the radio," Infanzon said. "This will hopefully reduce those numbers.”

Noting a similar law that was recently passed in Utah, Infanzon says that safety is the priority of this bill.

"I’ve been to way too many funerals of people who have been hit by car drivers," Infanzon said. "This will allow us to get out of the way and hopefully stop from being rear ended and being killed."

The bill has been passed by the House and Senate and now goes to Gov. Doug Ducey’s desk to be signed into law.
