Lia Thomas became the first transgender woman to win a Division I national championship last week when she emerged ahead of the competition in the NCAA’s 500-yard freestyle swimming event.
The issue of transgender athletes has become a part of the culture wars, another example of the partisan divide in the United States.
But while some are criticizing Thomas’ ability to compete in female races, others — like some of her University of Pennsylvania teammates — expressed their frustration in an anonymous letter, saying they felt unable to speak out about their concerns.
