The bad water situation in the Sonoran capital Hermosillo is poised to only get worse without major changes, experts say.
At an International Water Day event organized by the local nonprofit Hermosillo ¿Cómo Vamos? on Tuesday, local researchers did not mince words about the gravity of the situation. Among them was Nicolas Pineda, an investigator with the Colegio de Sonora.
“Hermosillo faces a water management crisis,” he said.
And that crisis has multiple layers. For one, he said the city is simply using too much water, but it’s also not being adequately monitored, much is lost by the system, and the body tasked with overseeing management has long been criticized for high leadership turnover.
The aquifers that supply much of the city’s water have also long been overdrawn by farms and other large users.
As noted in a new reportfrom the group, of which Pineda is an author, rising demand and climate change are expected to only worsen the situation.
