The Bureau of Land Management oversees 245 million acres throughout the U.S. for a variety of uses. Now the agency will open its lands to jazz this summer as part of its artist in residence program.
Navajo trumpeter Delbert Anderson will teach music workshops and then celebrate America’s public lands with a series of concerts, including one at Bears Ears National Monument.
During the tour, he will research Indigenous land stories and music at each location, followed by a workshop and performance.
“We are thrilled to have Delbert Anderson and his ensemble, D’DAT, playing at each one of these sites,” said Chris Holmes, a spokesman for the BLM.
Anderson, a faculty member at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico, combines elements of several kinds of music in his work, including Navajo spinning songs.
