Mexico’s president has a novel plan for the country’s former presidential plane.
As president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador has refused to use the luxurious Boeing 787 Dreamliner, criticizing it as an indefensible excess for leaders of a country with so much poverty. His government tried to sell it with no luck, and then held a largely symbolic raffle for the plane. Now he has a new plan: let the public rent it.
He suggested renting out to couples getting married, families celebrating their children’s birthdays, or companies wanting to take employees on trips.
“There are people paying to go to space, and they pay a lot,” said AMLO, as the president is widely known.
Revenue from the rentals would cover the costs of maintaining the plane, according to the president.
