Downtown Mesa now features banners honoring the first deaf man to win an Oscar for acting.
On Friday, the city hung four banners on Main Street to honor the achievements of actor and Mesa native Troy Kotsur.
Kotsur became the first deaf man to win an acting Oscar with his supporting role in "CODA," a film about a daughter who is the only hearing member of her deaf family. The film also won Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Academy Awards.
Kotsur is a graduate of Westwood High School and just the second deaf actor ever to win an Academy Award.
