Arizonans bet over $560 million on sports in January

Sports betting is booming in Arizona, according to the latest numbers.

Arizonans wagered over $560 million in January. The state collected nearly $1.7 million in tax revenue, which made it one of the top 10 sports betting markets in the country. Max Hartgraves with the Arizona Department of Gaming believes the industry will continue its upward trajectory.

“Generally speaking, we have grown a little bit each month as the market develops,” Hartgraves said. “I suspect that in the next few months, we’ll see a similar trend as we see those February and March figures come out, which also kind of coincide with the Super Bowl and March Madness as well.”

Hartgraves says Arizona eclipsed the half-billion-dollar mark with a vast majority of bettors bypassing traditional methods of wagering.

“Most of the bets come in a mobile fashion,” Hartgraves said. “I would say at least 95%, if not more, are usually placed via a mobile app. And that’s a common trend throughout the U.S.”

Legal sports betting in Arizona launched September 2021.
