Arizona State University and the government of neighboring Sonora hope to work together on key issues.
On Friday, Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo signed a collaboration agreement with ASU, one he hopes will spur work on indigenous issues, climate adaptation, education and other key areas in the state.
“We have to receive with complete openness the possibility of working together with Arizona, but particularly with a center of higher education that deserves the recognition that (ASU) has today,” Durazo said.
“Universities are institutions in our society that have a special responsibility, and that responsibility is to serve the people,” said ASU’s James O’Brien, who attended the signing event.
Among other things, the agreement seeks to help train indigenous women as health promoters in their communities, according to a Sonoran state release.
