Gas subsidies reinstated in northern Mexico days after being ended

Just days after being ended, gas subsidies in northern Mexico were reinstated.

On Monday, Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that a Friday decisionending the subsidies had been in error and had to be corrected. They were then reinstatedfor nearly the entire border region — with the exception of Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito in Baja California. The subsidies vary, but go as high as nearly a dollar per gallon.

Lopez Obrador said that — in addition to border residents — the subsidies benefit U.S. nationals who have been crossing the border south for gas and described the continued policy as an act of cross-border solidarity.
