In the lead-up to a national referendum on Mexico’s president, political events in Hermosillo and elsewhere have sparked controversy.
On Saturday, Mexico’s Interior Secretary Adan Lopez spoke at a massive rally in Hermosillo intended to encourage turnout at an April 10 national referendum, when voters will be askedwhether President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador should continue in office or end his six-year term early.
The whirlwind tour of northern Mexico in support of the president, reportedlyon a government plane, spurred criticism and calls for investigations into the alleged inappropriate use of public resources and violations of campaign rules.
But on Monday, President Lopez Obrador came to his secretary’s defense. Asked about the appearances, AMLO, as the president is widely known, said that Secretary Lopez was simply carrying out his official duties and does not go to rallies.
