A bill to classify the Tohono O’odham Nation’s Shadow Wolves unit as special agents is on President Biden’s desk for signing.
The Shadow Wolves unit is a policing unit made up of tribal members that works on investigations carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The unit patrols a more than 60 mile portion of the Arizona border that is inside the Tohono O’odham Nation.
They’re currently classified as tactical officers. Under the Shadow Wolves Enhancement Act, co-introduced by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema last year, the team would be reclassified as special agents.
In a statement about the bill's advancement, Sinema's office said the new classification would expand the unit’s ability to track cross-border criminal activity and would allow for more collaboration with the U.S. government.
