The Arizona Legislature is pushing a bill that could forgive up to $100,000 in student loans for veterinarians.
But the catch is they need to graduate after Jan. 1, 2023, and work at a nonprofit shelter or agricultural practice that has a shortage.
Bill author Republican Sen. T.J. Shope says the motivation for the measure is a vet shortage.
“It’s a real acute problem in our rural areas and our agriculture communities with their animals and now we are beginning to see the negative impacts of not having enough with our nonprofit communities that run things like the Humane Society," Shope said.
Those need to work at one of these locations full time for four years. While it has been approved by the House Committee, it awaits funding from the state’s budget.
