In 2016, Debora Colbert-Green left corporate America and joined with a friend, Janelle Wood, to start the Black Mothers Forum. They were concerned about the safety and well-being of their children — especially their Black sons.
Their mission was multifold, from bolstering kids' spiritual and emotional wellbeing to financial literacy and their education. In that vein, they wanted to end the school-to-prison pipeline that often exists for Black kids.
So after the pandemic hit, the two developed microschools here in the Valley aimed at educating Black children. Now, they are enrolling new students and expanding.
The Show spoke with Colbert-Green to learn about the process and how it got started.
