Mexico’s president is celebrating a lopsided win in a low-turnout referendum on whether he should continue in office.
On Sunday, Mexicans were asked whether President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or AMLO as he is widely known, should continue in office or end his six-year term early. The response, at least among those who participated, was overwhelming: some 92% said he should continue.
On Monday, AMLO described the recall election as “historic” and said it illustrates that it is the people of Mexico who are truly in charge.
But less than 20% of Mexican voters participated, according to the most recent tallies, and 40% was the threshold for the results to be binding. In neighboring Sonora, just 14% voted.
The leadup to the election was also marred by high-profile public officials being accusedof breaking election rules.
