Glendale facing lifeguard shortage at city pools

Cities across the Valley are still seeing lifeguard shortages as the summer draws near.

Paul King with the city of Glendale says two of its own pools are at risk of not opening this summer.

That’s similar to the city of Phoenix, which expects to keep more than half of its pools closed.

"We just aren’t getting the applicants to come out as much as we used to. So we have been seeing that trend reducing for a few years now," King said.

King says the city is looking at potentially settling for half the amount of lifeguards for Rose Lane and Foothill Pools, adding the shortage has become a nationwide trend.
