A major fire near a Sonoran colonial town with a significant expatriate population is nearly controlled.
The most recent report puts the area burned by the blaze at nearly 10,000 acres, making it the largest on record for the mountain range just south of Álamos. Authorities said the fire, which has been burning for the last 10 days, presents no danger to the town itself and is now 95% controlled.
State Deputy Zulema Bours, whose district includes Alamos, said that an unattended campfire is being investigated as a possible cause, adding that all who spend time in the state’s wild areas need to show “a lot of responsibility” to avoid similar incidents in the future.
