At a recent rally, former President Donald Trump bragged about Mexican officials folding to his immigration policy demands.
In his recounting of the summer 2019 events at an Ohio rally over the weekend, Trump said that his threat of imposing tariffs on Mexican imports led top Mexican officials to do an about face, and deploy thousands of soldiers to its borders and accept the Remain in Mexico policy.
Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard disputedthe account and said it was simply Trump in campaign mode ginning up anti-Mexican sentiment. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was more conciliatory in his comments Monday.
“I like Donald Trump, even though he’s a capitalist,” he said, riffing off Trump’s comment that he likes Lopez Obrador despite being a socialist. He too attributed the rhetoric to ongoing U.S. political campaigns.
