All aboard! Tempe streetcar service begins May 20

Riders will soon be able to hop aboard the  new Tempe streetcar. Valley Metro plans to begin service on May 20, and fares will be free for the first year of operation.

The Tempe streetcar has been under construction since 2018. The three-mile route runs along Mill and Ash avenues from Rio Salado Parkway and Marina Heights to Dorsey Lane and Apache Boulevard. The route includes stops near ASU’s Tempe Campus, Gammage Auditorium and Sun Devil Stadium.

The route also includes two connections to Valley Metro’s light rail. The bright green streetcars are smaller than light rail trains, with just one car. They’ll run every 15 to 20 minutes.
