AZ man convicted of smuggling $204,000 into Mexico in RV

Federal prosecutors say a 61-year-old man has been convicted of trying to smuggle hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash into Mexico.

Charles Robert Wright faces sentencing in July in Tucson federal court.

Prosecutors say last April Wright tried to drive a large Winnebago through the Lukeville port of entry and into Sonora. He told Customs officials that he was not carrying more than $10,000.

But an X-ray showed an irregularity in the RV’s roof. So federal officers did a search, found a secret compartment filled with cash and ultimately pulled more than $204,000 from the vehicle.
