Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee hopes to raise $50 million for 2023 game

The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee must secure thousands of hotel rooms and raise millions of dollars to host the game on Feb. 12, 2023.

As part of its deal with the NFL, the host committee had to convince hotels and resorts to reserve nearly 13,000 rooms for the league.

During a Phoenix city council subcommittee meeting, Kyle Hedstrom, host committee senior vice president, shared lodging data from Arizona’s last Super Bowl.

“Over the same weekend in 2014 as opposed to when the Super Bowl was here, there was 56% occupancy in 2014. That rose to 97% for the same weekend in 2015 around the Super Bowl,” he said.

The host committee hopes to raise $50 million. It’ll cover a variety of events from hosting out of state CEOs to fan gatherings, and at least $2 million to support local nonprofits.

Vice Mayor Laura Pastor said the City Council is interested in equity, “When efforts like this happen, a lot of resources come downtown and then other districts don’t receive the same and then other districts don’t receive the same, so we’re trying — because of that, we’re trying to make sure that there’s equity across all our districts and receive the same.”

While the game will be played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, downtown Phoenix will likely host several events as it did in 2015.

“Our overall goal is to make this a positive experience for our residents, right, our businesses, and of course our visitors and just created some really great memories around Super Bowl and Phoenix,” said Jay Parry, host committee president and CEO.

Phoenix Convention Center Director John Chan said representatives from 19 city departments are involved in the city’s Super Bowl steering committee to support the efforts of the NFL and Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee.
