The city of Flagstaff is working with Coconino County and the Flood Control District to avoid repeat flooding in the burn scar area of 2019’s Museum Fire.
The city has put up concrete barriers and sandbags as emergency measures, which Flagstaff Streets Section Director Scott Overton says have been effective.
“We saw it in 2021 and how it can be effective throughout the community to try to protect properties as this wash weaves its way through what used to be a traditionally pretty low-flow crossing, to now a much more reactive watershed," Overton said.
With the construction of a new Killip Elementary School, Overton says the two new athletic fields will serve multiple purposes.
"One will be to serve the needs of the students in the community and being athletic fields," Overton said. "And the second is more of a self-serving interest on the community's behalf: two large water detention basins."
Overton says the detention basins will hold up to 3 million gallons of water.
