Officials in neighboring Sonora say the arrival of a direct commercial flight will boost tourism in one of the state’s most popular beach destinations: Rocky Point.
The new flight from Tijuana to Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point, made its inaugural trip this weekend. It’s the first time in years the Mar de Cortez airport in the Sonoran tourist hub has had active commercial flights. And officials hope it will garner even more tourism for the city as it continues to recover from the pandemic.
Gov. Alfonso Durazo, who was in the city to welcome the first passengers, said he hopes this is the first of many flights to Rocky Point.
In January 2020, the city welcomed the first cruise to embark from its shores, in what many had hoped would be the beginning of a major new tourism industry. But the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic just months later stalled those plans.
The new 60-minute flight will be offered on Mondays and Fridays.
