Phoenix's first 100 degree day of the year may come this week. And the Phoenix nonprofit, Human Services Campus, is beginning its annual drive to collect bottled water for people experiencing homelessness.
Phoenix heat can be seriously dangerous for unsheltered people.

ThirstAid Drives will take place on the 1st Saturday of every month from May all the way through September.

"County health department data show us every year that is the group that is absolutely at the highest risk for heat-related illness or heat-related mortality," David Hondula, the city’s director of heat response and mitigation told KJZZ's The Show on Thursday. "We estimate that the risk for an unsheltered person in our community is 100 or even 200 times greater than a person who has regular housing."
The Human Services Campus, a downtown collaborative of several nonprofits that work on issues of homelessness, says it needs to collect 60,000 bottles of water to distribute this summer. The organization says it also urgently needs donations of hygiene products such as deodorant or sunscreen.
The first of this season’s monthly water collection events is planned for Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Donations can be dropped at the Human Services Campus at 1300 W. Harrison St.
