Phoenix Union passes a resolution to prohibit discrimination against transgender youth

On Thursday, one of the largest school districts in the state passed a resolution that prohibits discrimination against transgender children and youth.

The Phoenix Union High School District passed the  resolution in response to state legislation banning transgender students from participating in girls athletics. The resolution calls for a safe and inclusive school environment.

It also pointed to a recent study from the  Trevor Project that found that LGBTQ youth who don’t feel affirmed in their identity are more likely to attempt suicide and self harm.

In a statement, the Arizona Human Rights Campaign said “every child deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.” They also called on other districts to follow Phoenix Union’s lead.
