Yet another reporter has been found murdered in Mexico, putting the country on track for one of its worst years yet for violence against the press.
On Thursday in the Sinaloan capital Culiacan, the body of columnist Luis Enrique Ramirez was found. Over his decades-long career, he worked for several national outlets, and even founded his own — Fuentes Fidedignas, or reliable sources. State and federal officials are investigating the murder.
“2022 has been an extraordinarily violent year,” said Jan-Albert Hootsen, Mexico representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists. Already considered one of the world’s most dangerous countries for media workers, Ramirez was reportedly the ninth reporter killed so far this year in Mexico.
Unless major strides are made in reducing impunity for such crimes, Hootsen said the current six-year presidential administration is likely to be the “deadliest … in the history of Mexico.”
