Biden administration, federal agencies begin response to early wildfire season

Wildfire season has begun early in the Southwest, prompting a commitment from the Biden Administration to mobilize available funding and resources to help.

The White House says the number of acres burned across the United States is already 78% higher than the 10-year average for this time of year.

President Biden approved on Wednesday a Major Disaster Declaration for five counties in New Mexico, which the White House says has been particularly hard hit.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has also approved six Fire Management Assistance Grants to New Mexico.

The administration says it is also looking ahead to how monsoon season can affect previously burned areas, and says the US Forest Service is ready to send post-fire response teams to states affected by fires.
