Mexico’s president visits Sonora to address issues of violence, justice

Mexico’s president was in neighboring Sonora this week on a tour meant to address the state’s security concerns. He also met with members of Indigenous communities.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador held his daily press conference Friday from  Ciudad Obregon — a hotspot for violence in Sonora and nationwide.

He said the conference was held in the southern Sonoran city because it is the hardest hit by violence in the state. His administration has largely relied on the military and a newly created National Guard to tamp down soaring rates of homicide, kidnapping, extortion and other crimes there. But  violence remains high.

AMLO, as the president is widely known, also used the visit to sign a new agreement investing in Sonoran hospitals and to meet with members of Indigenous communities. He has promised to provide justice for historical wrongs that have marginalized those groups.
