Sonora’s governor said officials were moving to revoke a state mask mandate early this week. But legislators now say it’s staying in place for at least a bit longer.
In 2020, Sonoran legislators passed a law requiring face masks to be used in all public spaces, both indoors and out, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Gov. Alfonso Durazo had said he expected the state congress to vote to end the measure this week. But legislators on the congressional health commission said they won’t be undoing the mandate so quickly.
Oscar Castro, head of the commission, said legislators will meet to analyze and discuss the possibility in about three weeks. Removing the mask mandate will require the approval of 17 of the state’s 33 Congress members.
