A U.S. District Court judge is allowing a lawsuit to move forward that challenges a law that would remove some people from the permanent early voting list.
That’s partly due to statements from an Arizona lawmaker.
Judge Dominic Lanza initially rejected claims from voting rights groups that a 2021 state law interferes with the right to vote. The law removes people from the permanent early voting list if they miss four consecutive elections.
Though new evidence presented by the challengers showed the law could have a disparate impact on different racial groups.
Republican lawmaker John Kavanagh made comments during a CNN Interview that made an argument for reducing the voting population based on the “quality” of voters. Those comments combined with the evidence from challengers prompted the judge to let the case continue.
Lawyers will have a chance to present evidence before the judge on June 6.
