A new 200-bed shelter to provide heat relief for people experiencing homelessness is now open in downtown Phoenix. The shelter on 28th and Washington streets provides three meals a day, showers and dedicated beds.
Maricopa County Supervisor Steve Gallardo says the shelter does more than provide a bed and protection from the heat.
“Folks will be able to come in, be able to live there, have their meals there, deal with some of the professional staff on some of the services. We continue to want to work to get them into permanent housing," Gallardo said.
The shelter is a closed service, and clients need to be referred to the facility from a caseworker. It will be operated by St. Vincent de Paul to provide case management services for each resident.
