On Wednesday, the Phoenix City Council is expected to approve two police settlements.
The council will vote on paying $550,000 to the family of a woman killed during a vehicle chase. In August 2018, police were pursuing a stolen truck when that driver ran a red light, hit another vehicle and then struck the woman on a sidewalk.
The city determined the officer failed to follow policy by not trying to block the truck to prevent a pursuit.
The second settlement, for $250,000, involves a deadly police shooting in November 2020. A man was reported running in and out of traffic brandishing a handgun near 23 rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Police opened fire after they say he approached them and wouldn’t drop the weapon. After the man fell to the ground, police say he appeared to be trying to get up and would not comply with orders and they fired again.
The city said the man was under the influence of several drugs and had a history of mental illness.
