A new phone app intended to help Sonoran authorities identify bodies is now available for download in the United States.
Among other functions, IdSonora allows users to review images of the clothing, tattoos and other potentially distinguishing features of the 1,745 unidentified bodies in Sonoran custody.
Since the smartphone application was released in early May, four bodies have been identified by users, and it’s been downloaded more than 2,500 times. Now US residents who have missing loved ones in Sonora can also download it on their Apple or Android devices.
“There’s nothing like a family member directly seeing the clothing, the tattoos, the teeth, all of it,” said Cecilia Delgado, founder of the Buscadoras por la Paz Sonora, one of many searching groups active in the state.
Given that many family members of the missing live in the United States, she said making the app available there could help identify even more bodies, but also that it can be difficult emotionally to come across images that may be of loved ones.
