Kitchen, baths top home remodeling projects in 2021

Home remodeling projects are keeping contractors busy, and certain renovations are more in demand.

Kitchen and bath renovations make up the bulk of business for remodelers surveyed for the National Association of Home Builders/Westlake Remodeling Market Index. Eighty-one percent said kitchens were among the most common projects last year, with bathrooms a close second.

Full house remodels were at their highest level since 2005 — nearly 60% of remodelers cited them as common.

Other projects trailed substantially — about 30% said finished basements, decks, and window and door replacements were common. Fourteen percent of remodelers described home office additions as common and 5% said home gym additions were among last year’s most common projects.

Kitchens and baths have historically been top contenders in the NAHB survey. In 2019, they tied for the top spot and in 2020, bathrooms moved to the top.
