Out of Reach: The highs and lows of Phoenix's housing market

The Phoenix-area housing market is nothing short of gangbusters right now — and the housing market that is out of reach for many.  In The Show's new series "Out of Reach," hear from renters, buyers and the people tracking and analyzing market statistics and polling. Learn about creative housing options and some of the challenges facing the market, from red tape at city hall to particular issues faced by disenfranchised communities.

In March, Phoenix had the second largest gain in home price growth in the nation as buyers continue to flock here. It’s the first time in the last three years Phoenix did not lead the nation in rising home prices.

If you own a home, you’re likely watching your value go up, but you may also be wondering whether you could afford to move someplace else. Looking to buy? You might be outbid before you even get to see the place. Rents are skyrocketing. For some, there’s no place to go in a market that’s traditionally been seen as an alternative to pricey California.

On top of that, as the Biden administration attempts to stem the rising tide of inflation by raising interest rates, investors with cash offers often have an advantage that leaves other would-be buyers out of luck.

The series kicks off with someone who knows the market better than anyone — because she is steeped in the data everyday.

Tina Tamboer is senior housing analyst with the Cromford Report. The Show spoke with her to get the lay of the land for Phoenix's housing market.
